The children know that in English we learn to listen, speak, read and write to communicate with others.

The purpose of English in the National Curriculum is to teach pupils to write and speak fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Our curriculum aims promote high standards of literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word and to develop a love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

At Amble Links Primary School, English is taught as an integral part of our curriculum across all subjects.  Pupils will learn to read and write through a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts. Phonics and spelling, as well being part of every lesson, will be taught discretely at specific times each week. Handwriting is taught daily within reading, writing or spelling lessons.

In Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 our Systematic Synthetic Phonics Scheme is Monster Phonics and we use this as the main tool to teach the children to read and write.  Children at Amble Links begin their writing journey through Drawing Club in Reception and Curious Quest in Y1. When children are ready in Y1, they move to a book-based approach for teaching writing through Literacy Tree, taking them through to Y6. Literacy Tree is a complete, thematic approach to the teaching of primary English that places children's literature at its core. Grammar and punctuation is explored and taught through a quality text that the children are reading and shared writing which all adults model as part of the teaching process. In KS2 pupils are taught age-appropriate spelling patterns, as outlined in the spelling appendix of the National Curriculum, through Spelling Shed, which brings together the phonics, patterns, structures and origins of words.
